Do you like Chipotle?
How about Qudoba?
If you answer yes than there's a good chance you're going to like Habanero's Mexican Grill, 2229 S. Stoughton Road. This Mexican take-out in Madison, Wisconsin, serves those big burritos filled with beans, meat and all the extras just like the famous Mexican chains. But Habanero's is a little tough to find, set off the beaten path on the access road east of Stoughton Road across from Farm and Fleet.
One thing that sets Habanero's apart from the chains it resembles is thier portions. Where Chipotle or Qudoba might give you one scoop of meat, Habanero's heaps it up with three full scoops in every burrito they make.
The Saturday we stopped by for lunch the place was empty and the there were two guys behind the counter. We were greeted right when we came in and they were right there waiting to take our orders. If you've never been to Habanero's, it's set up like a Mexican-style Subway with all the meats, vegetables and sauces out front for you to choose from. You just tell the servers what you want and they make your buritto or salad to order.
We got the chicken buritto and Cane Asada salad with a sideorder of tortilla chips and salsa. The tortilla chips were fresh and warm, but the salsa lacked flavor. It could of used a little more kick with some peppers and maybe cilantro and salt to taste.
The vegetables, guacamole and pico de gallo sauces were fresh and tasty. LIke I mentioned there was plenty of meat, which added up to a healthy-sized meal making it a bit more than we could handle in one sitting. Unforetunately these large portions are expected in most restaurants so they were likely just trying to give customers what they want. The only other down side of our Habanero's dining experience was the meat, which leaned to the bland side. It tasted more like grandma's Sunday roast than the rich flavor you expect in good Mexican food.
I think Habanero's has the heart to do right, but they just need the right chef in the kitchen to get the flavors right.
SUM IT UP
- Hard to get to
- Fast friendly service
- Meat was bland
- Salsa lacked flavor
- Big portions
- Three out of Five Starrs
